Kroměříž Castle Library III. | Manuscripts of the 9th - 16th century

Kroměříž Castle | Tower
JUNE 17, 2021 – SEPTEMBER 30, 2021

The exhibition will present medieval and early modern manuscripts stored in the library of the Archbishops Castle in Kroměříž. Many of them were newly discovered, authored or dated as part of a detailed study of the collection, which will result in a catalog prepared by an authors team of specialists. The oldest manuscript of the chateau library is the Gregorian sacramental from the second half of the 9th century, an elegant codex written in Carolingian minuscule. Liturgical manuscripts are most often represented in the collection. These are missals, choral books, the Bible, but also small-format prayer books intended for private meditation. The library also preserves theological manuscripts, legal codes and books devoted to astrology, logic and medicine. Many manuscripts are richly decorated with illuminations. Due to the sensitivity of medieval books to climatic and light conditions, the manuscripts at the exhibition will alternate every month so that the entire collection of the Kroměříž Castle Library will be gradually presented.
