Artemisia Gentileschi | David Contemplating the Head of Goliath

There is an inscription on one of the pictures in the old inventory of the art collection of the bishops of Olomouc which reads: David mit dem Haubt Goliat in schwartz vergolter Ram, vom Arthemio. This excellent picture was later attributed to different painters until the issue of its authorship was resolved by a general inscription “a copy of a painting by Orazio Gentileschi”. The recent restoration of the painting and above all the reasons that led to the acceptance of the old inscription and thus to the change in authorship will be presented in the restoration exhibition held at Kroměříž Chateau. The exhibition draws upon previous projects of the Olomouc Museum of Art familiarising the public with the restoration of significant items from the museum’s and Archbishop’s collections.
