Laying the cornerstone of St. Peters Basilica in Rome, 1506

The obverse of the medal bears a robust portrait of Pope Julius II and a rear view of the facade of St. Peters Basilica from an unused design by architect Donato Bramante. The purpose of the mint was quite interesting; several coins were inserted in the foundations of St. Peters Basilica.
